8 Feb 2010An interior perceived by some as eccentric in style might be deemed totally undesirable by others, and greeted with cries of horror. Some brave souls, who have a completely individual style and total confidence in their own taste, do create some stunning interiors. In these kitchen design ideas pure whim takes precedence over practicality; visual delight is often wildly self-indulgent; nothing needs to match.
An idiosyncratic modern kitchen design is rarely formally planned; they are more likely to evolve. Furniture and furnishings are accumulated and chosen for their individual merits rather than being selected to fit into a preconceived scheme.
Priceless antiques can sit happily alongside chairs retrieved from refuse tips and Japanese simplicity may be juxtaposed with Victorian gothic. The eccentric look is frequently characterized by wit and humor: someone obsessed with photography might create a kitchen resembling a dark room; somebody else might cover every available surface with scraps of broken china and glass for a mosaic effect.
True individualists have a very particular skill; they can improvise in any situation to produce original solutions that challenge accepted conventions and still “work”. Instead of leveling and covering a scruffy and uneven concrete floor, the eccentric might varnish it – to accentuate the stains rather than concealing them. Similarly, the gleaming white surface of a refrigerator front might be considered vastly improved by several coats of vibrantly colored spray paint.
It is not possible to copy an eccentric kitchen style because its spirit is the creation of one individual, but you can be inspired by it, admire the confidence of its creator and acknowledge that the style has a real integrity.
